As you may know, uvarovite is a green species of garnet colored by the element chromium. It is quite rare, occurring in only a few localities worldwide, mostly in Russia. A couple of chromium mines there have produced by far the world's finest examples. The sparkling gemmy emerald green crystals never get very large, seldom exceeding one millimeter in diameter, but usually forming drusy masses that make stunning display specimens. The mines there are soon shutting down and this pricey mineral will only get more expensive. This is one of the larger pieces available, and the crystals reach the maximum size for uvarovite. The location is the Saranovskaya Mine, Tomsk Region, Ural Mountains, Russia. Size. 5 x 3 inches. Has a flat sawn base. On chromite matrix.
