Very dark, almost black beta quartz crystals in anhydrite matrix from the Monteriggioni Quarry in Monteriggioni, Siena, Tuscany, Italy. Four crystals are showing, the two larger ones are in fine condition, but the two small ones are broken. Careful sawing would be advantageous. Although black, this is not considered smoky quartz. Beta quartz is the rare form where no prism face is present, just two terminations back to back. The largest crystal is 0.75 inch (2 cm) across. Overall the specimen measures 2 x 1.5 x 1.25 inches ( 5 x 3.8 x 3.1 cm).
